I have a seven year old daughter. No, she has not read my book. She’s much too young. But she does hear me talking about it, sees me reading the proof, and watches me write.
I began writing again because she wants to be an illustrator when she grows up. So I write little stories and let her draw pictures to go with them. We staple them together and she would read them as her personal book collection. Her love for drawing inspired my love for writing, and Beasts and Savages was born.
Tonight while she was drawning she asked me why my book didn’t have any pictures. I explained that big kids usually read books without pictures because they use their imagination and see the story in their head.
“That’s sad, Mama. Even my chapter books have at least one picture,” Little Miss said while she colored.
When she was done, she handed her picture to me and it became my very first fan art.
